On Sunday afternoon, the Kansas City Chiefs played a non-conference game against the Carolina Panthers. Kansas City came into the game off its first loss of the season, a 30-21 defeat to Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. The Chiefs wasted no time going back to work, with running back Samaje Perine returning the opening kickoff 56 yards to the Carolina 41-yard line.
Travis Kelce has moved into third on all-time NFL list on receiving yards for a tight end. The Kansas City Chiefs star recorded a 19-yard completion to move third, ahead of Antonio Gates, with an overall tally of 11,854 yards. Gates is on 11,841. Second on the all-time list is Jason Witten, on 13,046, who might be in Kelce’s sights before he calls it a day and retires from the NFL.
Three plays later, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes found tight end Noah Gray for a 35-yard touchdown, giving the Chiefs a 7-0 lead. Carolina marched down the field on their first drive of the game, but only scored three points, trimming Kansas City’s lead to 7-3.
Just a few minutes later, on Kansas City’s second drive of the game, facing a second-and-four from the Carolina 44-yard line, Mahomes connected with tight end Travis Kelce for 19 yards. The team’s drive eventually stopped, resulting in a field goal that gave Kansas City a 10-3 advantage.

While Kelce’s reception could easily have been overlooked, the Chiefs refused to let it happen. According to Kansas City’s official X – formerly Twitter – page, Kelce’s 19-yard reception pushed him to third place on the all-time tight end receiving yards chart.
Kelce entered Sunday’s game with 11,835 yards, only six yards behind legendary tight end Antonio Gates, who had 11,841 throughout his illustrious career. The Chiefs great now trails just Tony Gonzalez (15,127) and Jason Witten (13,046) on the all-time receiving list for tight ends. Kelce has had a great year, as he tied Gonzalez’s Chiefs franchise record with his 76th touchdown reception earlier this season.
Top of the leaderboad is Tony Gonzalez on 15,127 – a lead that is likely too much for the 35-year-old Kelce to reel in. The Chiefs tight end has one more year on his Kansas City deal after this season.
