Fans of Travis Kelce are wondering about the NFL star’s future ahead of a historic Super Bowl return on Sunday (9 February).
The Kansas City Chiefs reached their fifth championship game in six years and could be set to claim the winning title for a third consecutive win – with the team having previously won the Super Bowl in 2023 and 2024.
Kelce, 35, is finishing his 12th NFL season and some football fans believe a huge announcement could be on the horizon.
The tight end shared during an interview with sports journalist, Stephen A Smith, in January that his thoughts about retirement, which he says ‘changes every single day’.
“I love everything that I’m doing in this building, but at the end of the day I’m not having that extreme success on the field as I have individually,” Kelce shared on the YouTube show. “… I’ll reevaluate it like I always do, and I’ll probably tell myself how much I love this thing and I’ll come back next year.”
Kelce also said his girlfriend Taylor Swift is fully supportive whatever he decides to do.
“She’s fully encouraging me to enjoy playing this game,” he said. “She loves coming to Arrowhead and coming to the games and cheering for me so I got all the support in the world to keep chasing these dreams.”
His older brother Jason Kelce retired after playing 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024 – which is may be why some fans believe Kelce will follow suit after his 13th season.
One spectator on Twitter pondered: “I also think Travis Kelce may retire after his 13th season like his bro did, and that’s Taylor’s lucky number. Which would be after next season….. If he doesn’t do it after winning another Super bowl.”
Another fan wrote: “I think next game will be Travis Kelce’s last in the NFL. No way he doesn’t retire after this, and it’s a shame that his overall likeability from NFL fans dwindled because of the media’s portrayal of his romantic relation but he’ll always be deserving of his success.”
A third person added: “This is me publicly tweeting I don’t think Travis Kelce will retire at the end of this season. He’s got one more left in him. If I’m wrong… I’ll stay off of Twitter for 48 hours.”
Kelce gave an update about his thoughts on retirement this week in the days leading up to the big game, where he firmly said that he has no plans to retire anytime soon – even if the Chiefs win a third consecutive Super Bowl.
On Monday (3 February) he was asked about his plans over the next three years.
“Hopefully still playing football,” the Grotesquerie actor said (via NBC News). “I love doing this, I love coming into work every day. I feel like I still have a lot of good football left in me. We’ll see what happens. I know I’ve been setting myself up for other opportunities in my life. That’s always been the goal knowing football only lasts for so long.
“You have to find a way to get into another career and another profession. I’ve been doing that in my offseason. But for the most part, I plan on being a Kansas City Chief and playing football.”
Kelce also weighed in on fan theories that he’ll propose to Taylor Swift if the Chiefs win on Sunday.
He responded: “A Super Bowl ring? Next question.”
