Seemingly every sports media pundit has an opinion about Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s possible retirement and the role his girlfriend Taylor Swift may or may not play in his decision.
ESPN’s Pat McAfee is no different, and after returning to the airwaves on Wednesday after a mini hiatus following Super Bowl 59, he offered his thoughts on arguably the biggest current story of the NFL offseason.
McAfee, took a moment during Wednesday’s “Pat McAfee Show” to lay out how he really feels about the high-profile relationship between the Chiefs All-Pro TE and the “Blank Space” singer while offering his thoughts on how much Swift is affecting Kelce’s decision about whether or not to retire.
“You’ve won a bunch of Super Bowls, you’ve made a bunch of money, you’ve represented our sport very, very well publicly,” McAfee stated. “Nobody in football will want to give him that credit.
A lot of super football people will be like, ‘I don’t care he’s dating Taylor Swift’ – how about how he’s put on for the football world while dating the biggest tar on earth, and how about them being a genuine [couple]?
“Maybe [his life with Swift outside of football] creeps in if you’re having an offseason with the biggest star on earth and you’re experiencing what billionaires experience. … She might be the one. She is so impressive.
So, maybe there is a chance that after you lose and get devastated you don’t want to sign back up to ever feel like that again…but I don’t see it that way, just like I don’t see it with Aaron (Rodgers).
I don’t believe these football guys don’t want to play football.” McAfee is one of a few sports media personalities with a platform as big as ESPN to actually speak out in favor of Kelce and Swift’s relationship.

Other analysts such as Todd McShay and a handful of others have actually blamed Swift for Kelce’s last two seasons, which have been subpar compared to what everyone has come to expect from the 35-year-old pass-catcher.
Last year was the first time since 2015 that Kelce didn’t record a 1,000-yard season, and this year he posted 823 yards receiving and three touchdowns – both career lows.
But in the week before Kansas City’s 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, Kelce admitted he still feels like he has some good football left in him, and many around the team, including general manager Brett Veach and quarterback Patrick Mahomes, seem optimistic he will return in 2025.
