In Week 11 of the 2024 regular season, the Kansas City Chiefs suffered their first setback at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, as the Buffalo Bills defeated the reigning Super Bowl champions 30–21. Before Sunday’s game against the Bills, the Chiefs, who have cultivated one of the NFL’s most acrimonious rivalries with Buffalo in recent years, appeared to be poised for a perfect season.
Only twice did Kansas City find themselves ahead of the Bills. The Chiefs took the lead in the second quarter both times. Buffalo, however, made sure to respond to every Chiefs score on their subsequent drive in order to regain the lead. As a result, the Chiefs’ lead on Sunday was only 7:36.
Given how the Chiefs’ loss will affect their chances of making the playoffs, it is sense that fans would be outraged. However, it appears that others are also upset about the loss besides fans. According to Chiefs radio host Darren Smith tweeted, “When I say Chiefs CEO and owner Clark Hunt is pissed with Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes, that in and of itself is an understatement.” after the game ended.
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are very influential players in the team, and as such tend to be the scapegoat in such scenarios. Unfortunately, Smith took the tweet down, but receiving that insight is a bit shocking. The Chiefs are still one game ahead of Buffalo in the standings despite losing to the Bills once more. Hunt’s anger over a regular-season loss to the Bills is also a little perplexing given that Kansas City has dominated Buffalo in the playoffs.
Having said that, Hunt’s response to the defeat might have been more influenced by the team’s appearance than by the opponent. Don’t get me wrong, Hunt would have been thrilled to defeat the Bills in the regular season, but regardless of who they lost to, the response might have been the same.
When a fan questioned Smith’s reporting in the comments section of his initial tweet, he reaffirmed his account, but it’s still unclear exactly what part of Kansas City’s performance irritated Hunt. Kansas City continues to have the best record in the AFC despite their defeat.
Didn’t and don’t care if I got engagement, I posted what I observed.
