The Dallas Cowboys have just five playoff wins since their last Super Bowl championship in 1995, and the team hasn’t made it past the divisional round of the playoffs in that time.

During that span, Dallas has ran through 29 different starting quarterbacks and seven head coaches (soon to be eight), and the team has struggled to stay relevant despite one of the wealthiest and most outspoken owners in the NFL in Jerry Jones.

And yet, Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin still believes fans outside of Texas care just as much about the Cowboys as they did back in their heyday.

That is why he has such a big issue with pop star Taylor Swift and Indiana Fever str Caitlin Clark. During a recent episode of the “It Is What It Is” podcast, Irvin claimed that both Swift and Clark were trying to convince everyone that the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are the new “America’s Team.”

“We’re going to talk about Caitlin Clark and Taylor Swift at the Kansas City Chiefs game,” Irvin said. “They’re trying to [steal the ‘America’s Team’ moniker from the Cowboys].

Those are two good old American girls. They’re trying to make those Chiefs – they’re trying to steal America’s title.”

While few likely believe that’s what Swift and Clark were actually doing last week when they sat together in a suite during the Chiefs’ 23-14 win over the Houston Texans in the AFC divisional round, Irvin is right to be paranoid about the situation.

The “America’s Team” moniker is something the Cowboys have prided themselves on ever since announcer John Facenda dubbed them as such during a highlight film from the 1978 season.

And while the Cowboys had one of the NFL’s strongest dynasty runs 1992 to 1995 in which they won three Super Bowls in four years, the team seems to have fallen out of favor among casual fans because of the antics of polarizing owner Jerry Jones and a lack of playoff success.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs are in the midst of a dynasty of their own having won three Super Bowls in the last five seasons and being just two wins away from becoming the first team in NFL history to three-peat as Super Bowl champions.

Because of head coach Andy Reid, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and star tight end Travis Kelce, who’s also Swift’s boyfriend, the Chiefs are one of the league’s most popular teams, and they have as good an argument as anyone to be America’s new team.
