The brutal ending to Super Bowl LIX made for a pretty sobering reality for the Kansas City Chiefs. One win away from a coveted “three-peat,” the Chiefs were humiliated at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles 40-22.
This loss confronted them with questions about the sustainability of their dynasty with several key agents set to hit free agency in the coming weeks. More importantly, though, the game left the Chiefs wondering about the status of star tight end Travis Kelce.
Many assumed the future Hall of Famer would announce his retirement in the aftermath of a victory. But following the defeat, an upset Kelce understandably refused to answer those questions. However, Chiefs’ Kingdom and the rest of the NFL audience finally have their answer.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach informed reporters at the NFL Combine Tuesday that Kelce intends to return next season and is “fired up.”
“We left it as, he’d be back and we’re excited to get him back and get him going,” Veach said. This major decision means he will finish out his contract and play for a 12th season.
According to NFL media’s Ian Rapoport, Kelce has taken some time since the Super Bowl to reflect on his decision before settling on a return. The Chiefs’ tight end believes he has “plenty left in the tank.”
Perhaps what is “left in the tank.” will merely be enough to get him through one more season in Kansas City, but he will be welcomed back with open arms as the Chiefs attack a crucial offseason for the franchise.
Having a future Hall of Fame pass-catcher back in the fold is certainly a relief for Patrick Mahomes, but there is still work to be done. Kansas City will need to solidify a stronger receiving core around Mahomes and Kelce while adding some insurance to what proved to be a shaky offensive line.
Kelce faced some setbacks in the 2024 season, catching 97 passes for a career-low 823 yards and eight touchdowns.
Nonetheless, the return of veteran Kelce cannot be understated and gives Kansas City some momentum as they look to defend their AFC crown again in the 2025 season.
