The San Francisco 49ers will meet the 7-3 Green Bay Packers on the road without their main quarterback. QB1 Brock Purdy (right shoulder) was ruled out of the team’s Week 12 game after participating in limited practice on Wednesday and Thursday and missing the whole exercise on Friday. The 49ers’ third-year quarterback suffered a right shoulder injury during the team’s Week 11 game against the Seahawks.
“I don’t want to say there is long term concern. We got the MRI on Monday, we really just thought he needed some rest,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Friday. “We really weren’t concerned about him not being good this week, but when he started up Thursday, it surprised him, it surprised us how (his shoulder injury) felt. So, we had to shut him down.
“I really don’t know what to think of it. The MRI doesn’t look like that, so it should be all right. But, the way it responded, it really is up in the air for next week. We’ll have to see on Monday.”
Purdy has missed only one game since his debut start for the 49ers in Week 14 of the 2022 season, the regular season finale against the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. With Purdy out of the lineup against the Packers, ninth-year pro Brandon Allen will lead the 49ers’ offense on Sunday at Lambeau Field.
Allen was designated as the 49ers’ backup quarterback in September. He’s made nine NFL starts, the most recent coming in the final game of the 2021 season as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals. In that game, Allen completed 15 of 29 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown in the team’s tight loss to the Cleveland Browns.
Defensive lineman Nick Bosa, who had missed all three practices this week due to a hip/oblique issue, was also ruled out on Sunday. Meanwhile, Trent Williams, the left tackle, is questionable for this weekend.
